About Lloyd EcoDistrict

Lloyd EcoDistrict is a small nonprofit with a big vision: to make Portland’s Lloyd neighborhood a model of equity, resilience, and climate protection at the neighborhood scale. We bring together residents, businesses, community-based organizations, public agencies, and institutions to co-create solutions that strengthen community connection, climate readiness, and inclusive prosperity.

We are a certified EcoDistrict and Just Community, the first in Oregon and among a small number globally. Our work is guided by a community-developed 2030 Roadmap, which centers equity, resilience, and climate protection as inseparable priorities. Lloyd EcoDistrict is committed to honoring the history of the Lloyd neighborhood and Lower Albina, including the displacement of Portland’s Black community, and supporting a future rooted in restoration, belonging, and shared stewardship.

About the Role

The Executive Director (ED) is the primary leader, steward, and connector for Lloyd EcoDistrict. This is a highly relational, hands-on role for someone who thrives in a small organization, enjoys wearing many hats, and is energized by both strategy and action.

This is a steady, trusted organization entering a thoughtful next chapter focused on deepening impact, strengthening partnerships, and evolving intentionally over time rather than rapid scale. The ED operates with significant trust and autonomy from the Board of Directors and works within the organization’s EcoDistrict framework and 2030 Roadmap to translate community vision into real, on-the-ground impact.

Lloyd EcoDistrict’s work comes to life through visible, community-centered programming and events such as Lloyd Live gatherings, river and park stewardship events, and collaborative placemaking and sustainability projects that bring people together and build shared ownership of the neighborhood.

The Executive Director is accountable to the Board of Directors and empowered to lead day-to-day operations and decision-making within Board-approved strategy and policy.

What You’ll Do

Organizational & Strategic Leadership

  • Lead implementation of the community-developed 2030 Roadmap
  • Translate long-term vision into annual priorities, program development, work plans, and achievable goals
  • Balance big-picture thinking with day-to-day execution in a small nonprofit

Community, Partnerships & Visibility

  • Serve as a visible, trusted presence in the Lloyd neighborhood
  • Build and sustain authentic relationships with residents, businesses, community organizations, funders, and public agencies
  • Act as the organization’s primary spokesperson

Fundraising & Financial Stewardship

  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with funders and donors
  • Develop and manage the annual budget in partnership with the Board
  • Ensure fiscal integrity of the organization, including budget oversight, financial reporting, and responsible use of resources
  • Support long-term financial sustainability through thoughtful planning and resource development

Team Leadership & Operations

  • Support, manage, and collaborate with a small, capable staff team
  • Foster a workplace culture grounded in equity, trust, flexibility, and shared accountability
  • Oversee and execute contracts, agreements, and organizational commitments in alignment with Board-approved policies
  • Oversee organizational systems, compliance, and operations to ensure smooth day-to-day functioning
  • Hire, support, and manage staff in alignment with organizational values, policies, and capacity
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen organizational capacity over time

Board Partnership & Governance

  • Partner closely with the Board of Directors to advance the organization’s mission, support effective governance, and maintain organizational health
  • Provide regular, timely updates and strategic guidance to support informed Board decision-making
  • Work with the Board to translate the community-developed 2030 Roadmap into annual priorities, work plans, and organizational goals

  • Comfort working in complexity, ambiguity, and relationship-rich environments
  • Strong communication and trust-building skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and community-centered work
  • Fundraising and financial stewardship experience in a small organization is a plus

A specific degree is not required. Relevant lived and professional experience are equally valued.

  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Approximately 90% employer-covered health insurance
