JOIN THE INTERGENERATIONAL COMMUNITY DOCUMENTARY MOVIE NIGHT: Generations, Home, and the Impact of Changing Climate
How this all works is you will first watch the film on your own prior to our event. Then we will meet on Zoom on the day of the event, where you participate in multiple rounds of small group discussions with a different discussion prompt and different randomized groups for each round. This gives you the opportunity to hear a variety of perspectives throughout the night. Then we will follow with the special guest Q&A! Again, you must watch the film on your own BEFORE the event. You will receive the Zoom link and password once you register for the event.
When frozen, the permafrost is a bulwark that keeps the ocean and its storms away from land that sits above it where native villagers live, work, play, and carry on their culture. Climate change is thawing the permafrost in Alaska.
PBS FRONTLINE’s Alaska’s Vanishing Native Villages takes viewers into Native communities confronting thawing permafrost due to climate change and the difficult prospect of relocation as storms ravage their villages. Produced with Arizona State University’s Howard Center for Investigative Journalism, the documentary explores threats to homes and ways of life rooted in the land and sea.
For this special virtual Community Documentary Night in honor of Native American Heritage Month, we are meeting up across generations to talk about the documentary. These communities’ experiences bring climate change close to our hearts, connecting environmental concerns with family, cultural identity, and belonging.
TAKE ACTION
Join Elders Climate Action on November 1, 7–9 PM ET for Community Documentary Night. We’ll be joining a number of Intergenerational partners for a small group discussion about the film. Watch the documentary on PBS FRONTLINE on your own ahead of time. Patty Talahongva, Estelle Thomson, and Agatha Napoleon from the film will be joining us for a special guest Q&A. Then we will shift into smaller groups for discussion. Register to join the Community Documentary Night.
Partners for Community Documentary Night include Students for a Sustainable Earth, Students! Climate Action Network, genCLEO at the University of Tampa, Elders Climate Action, the Environmental Concerns Organization, and genCLEO at Eckerd College.
