About the event

At a time when the US military is intensifying wars of aggression abroad and increasing militarism against the people at home, the Rose Festival is hosting Fleet Week in early June. Fleet Week brings lethal Navy warships into the Willamette River and docks them directly next to the Rose Festival.

As people concerned about climate and environmental justice, we have to take a stand: the U.S. military is the one of the largest institutional greenhouse gas emitters in the  world, with a carbon footprint larger than many individual countries. It also contaminates land and water with deadly toxins and destroys entire ecosystems during wartime (and war “games”)…all while being exempt from global climate accords. It has been estimated that Portland’s Fleet Week (about 10 destroyers making a two-week voyage to our riverfront) has a carbon footprint larger than that of 770 cars over the course of an entire year.

Join KSO for a screening of Earth’s Greatest Enemy, a new documentary by Abby Martin of the Empire Files, which details the climate impacts of the U.S. military. Then, mobilize with us to a community peace forum on June 5th and a rally against Fleet Week on June 6th – more details at the screening!
