About the event
Join Rachael Guiles and Lucy Hassel for a Mending Circle with the nascent Portland chapter of Remake. If you have a stack of items with tears, holes, or missing buttons, why not give them a new life and prevent them from ending up in the landfill? This gathering will be a low-key hour full of community and stitching. We will provide basic instructions for simple mending of tears, holes, and missing buttons.
Mending your clothes perfectly ties into the #NoNewClothes challenge from Remake. In a nutshell, it challenges you to buy no new clothes—whether that’s buying nothing at all or only secondhand—for 90 days. The purpose of this challenge is to stop and consider the values we want to wear, and the role we can play in addressing overconsumption to change the fashion industry. You’ll have a meaningful impact, such as reducing your carbon footprint, keeping your money out of the pockets of exploitative companies, and limiting the waste you send to landfills. If you’re interested, you can sign up here for the challenge: https://remake.world/no-new-clothes/#form
We will have a limited amount of items to borrow or use during the event. Please feel free to bring your own supplies to ensure there is enough for everyone, especially if you are looking to match something very specific.
These are the supplies we will have on hand to borrow/use:
-Thread
-Needles
-Pins
-Scissors
-Buttons
-Fabric Scraps
-Embroidery Hoops
-Mending books for inspiration
-Darning Supplies – Darning egg, Lightbulb
This event will be held at the lovely Starlight Knitting Society in SE Portland. Starlight is a neighborhood knit shop with community at its heart. A special mention that they carry local dyers and makers as much as possible.
Remake unites changemakers in the fight for human rights and climate justice in the clothing industry. Not able to join this event, but want to join the Portland chapter of Remake? Reach out to Rachael via portlandremake@gmail.com.
